Lifelong Learning
At the Little Minyan, we see Bar and Bat Mitzvah as a ritual portal into the enriching journey that is lifelong Jewish learning. In addition to programming offered by our Spiritual Leader (our rabbi/teacher) Jessica Shimberg (a candidate for s’micha/ordination in the ALEPH Ordination Program), members and guests provide programs in response to community interests. A variety of approaches are used from Torah and book discussions to hands-on activities, from movies and discussion to meditation and hiking. We meet regularly on Shabbat mornings at members’ homes to discuss the Parsha Ha’Shavua/weekly Torah portion. More information is available on our calendar.
If you have ideas or skills to share with our community, or would like to get involved in Lifelong Learning, contact Sharonah Laemmle through littleminyan@littleminyan.org or leave a message at 614-459-9593.

Lifelong Jewish learning is often imagined as a path that begins in childhood and continues steadily through every stage of life. At its heart, this approach views study not as a single milestone but as an ongoing practice, one that weaves together Torah, conversation, reflection, and lived experience. A community that embraces this philosophy welcomes learners of every age, recognizing that curiosity and the search for meaning do not pause when formal schooling ends. Study becomes a way of staying rooted while remaining open to growth, inviting each person to deepen their understanding of tradition at their own pace and through their own questions.
Bar and Bat Mitzvah can be understood as a ritual threshold, a doorway through which young people enter a wider world of Jewish responsibility, learning, and belonging. The preparation for this moment opens into something larger than a single ceremony: it introduces a lifelong relationship with Torah, community, and the rhythms of the Jewish year. When surrounded by supportive teachers, family, and friends, this passage becomes a celebration of both individual readiness and collective continuity. The learning that follows, whether through texts, discussion, hands-on activities, or shared experiences, carries forward the same sense of possibility that marks the day itself.
A thriving kehilah builds its educational life around the gifts and interests of its members, drawing on the wisdom that already exists within the community. A spiritual leader can guide the journey, yet the path is enriched when learners and teachers share what they love, from book conversations and film discussions to meditation, hiking, and quiet contemplation. Meeting in homes on Shabbat mornings to wrestle with the weekly parasha keeps learning connected to relationship and place. This collaborative spirit reflects a Reconstructionist sensibility, one that honors tradition while welcoming reinterpretation, encouraging every voice to contribute to the ongoing work of study and renewal.
